My Parents Are Becoming Their Own Kind of Expat
October 6th, 2008 Posted in sports, travelWritten by Shanie
My parents have begun a journey this week into living the life of a gypsy expat.
My mom and dad have left their jobs, sorted through belongings and put important items into storage, sold everything that was clutter and rented out their house. Now their new home is a tandem bike while they travel from Bellingham, Wa (if everything goes as planned and I truly hope it does) to Ushuaia, Argentina.
My parents have been talking about making a change for awhile. When they made their way down south last November to visit us for the first time my dad’s intial reaction was,
“Wow, Shanie! You’re living my dream life.”
It was no secret that they wanted to experience the life of living abroad.
They looked into buying property here and creating a life but chose a different path, involving 4 pedals.
For me, what they are doing is much crazier than a thirty-something couple moving 7,000 miles away from friends and family when they are supposed to be working the “American Dream”.
But I am all for it.
Living in Patagonia is one way to live abroad. I am looking forward to seeing how my parent’s version works out.
May they always remain safe, have the wind at their backs and encounter many travel treasures along their journey.

Sure sounds like a change of pace. I cannot imagine my parents on a tandem!
Now that the American Dream is starting to fall apart, all us globe trotting ex=pats look slightly smarter.
