Tandeming into Mexico

Well, my parents, in their tandem bicycle expat travels, have already made it through the west coast of the United States and are fifteen miles off the Mexican border. They are planning on riding into Tecate tonight, staying the night and joining in on the Mexican holiday festivities before they head on. It is crazy to think that they will not be so easy to contact from now on and that they are truly taking their riding voyage to the next level.

My parents called to let me know that they were about to cross the border. In speaking about the adventures that lie ahead, my Dad told a story about a fellow hosteler that had traveled to Tijuana. While walking the neighborhoods, an older Mexican man came up to the Gringo, thrust a bottle of tequila in his face and asked him if he wanted a drink. The visitor took the drink and was amazed when the old man asked him for $5 dollars in payment. The Gringo was appalled and felt taken advantage of. The man had told my parents this story in hopes of warning them of things to come.

Knowing from personal experience, many of the horror stories that one hears about traveling in third world countries is only a small percentage of all the great things that can occur while abroad. I have faith that my parents will stay safe.

Just be sure to stay away from the wandering Tequila salesman…

They have a blog they have been updating frequently, it can be found here.
