Phrase of the Week

June 4th, 2008 Posted in culture, lifestyle, phrase of the week

gringoed:To be taken advantage of, given a higher price, etc due to one’s origin. As anyone who has lived outside their home country will know, sometimes a person is treated with a separate set of rules, prices, or priorities. Here in Argentina, we sometimes get different treatment because we are “gringos” or “yankees”. Of course, we have become much wiser to it, and often times stand up for ourselves or take our business elsewhere.

So, we use a now common phrase for when we are getting the run around. We simply say, “we are getting gringoed”.

Do you get called ‘gringos’ and not ‘yanquis’? At least in Cordoba, the gringos are the italians…

I would say we get called JANK-KEYS more, but we call ourselves gringos, henced being gringoed.
