Bariloche Breweries

There is a treasure found here in Bariloche (and neighboring El Bolson) that is not found in the rest of Argentina.

This Patagonian undiscovered gem is the hand-crafted, delectable cerveza artesanal (micro brew).

Argentina is well known for it’s world class wines, but much isn’t mentioned about the beer. Outside of Patagonia, we have found all the beer to basically taste the same, kind of like Budweiser. In these parts however, there is a community of people dedicated to making and enjoying tasty beer.

The flavorful micro brew of southern Argentina is yet to be distributed outside of the Patagonia area.  The craft of home made beer is new to the area. Within the last decade, over 10 breweries have sprouted up around Bariloche alone. In addition, there is a local community of brewers that “brew their own”.

Though not a complete collection, here is a list of some of the great breweries of the Bariloche area:

  • Valais: This brewery is located in the small Swiss colony, Colonia Suiza, outside of Bariloche. They are a true local flavor that is present at the local music shows and summertime village get-togethers. They describe themselves as the true flavor of homemade beer.
  • Antares: (Calle Elflein 47, Tele: 431454) A restaurant/brewery and tourist favorite. They sometimes also offer live music. They have a great tasting Barley beer that is very potent. Located in the center of town, in case your plans are to go clubbing later that night.
  • Berlina: (Avenida Bustillo KM 11.750 Tele: 523336) Another restaurant/brewery that has great items throughout the menu. The establishment is located in a great place for evening sunsets.
  • La Cruz: (Calle Nilpi 789 Tele: 525065) This is a locals favorite. A small, intimate setting where conversation and tasting the various flavors is a common pastime.
  • Cerverceria Blest: (Avenida Bustillo 11.6 Tele: 461026) This restaurant/brewery is a tradition among the people of Bariloche and the tourists. Guests throughout the years have scribbled thoughts on napkins that are tacked to the restaurants wall space. The dishes are hearty and of European flair. Be sure to get there early if visiting in high season. The line can sometimes be hours long.
  • Cerveza Artesanal Gilbert: (Ruta 77, KM 24 Tele: 448347) This is our personal favorite. This is a campground, restaurant and brewery that is owned and operated by two brothers. The feeling of the establishment is warm and inviting, with friendly staff happy to serve you. They are open from 12pm on, with no break for siesta and are strategically located on the way home from some of the best hiking trails.

There is a special beer tour that visits several of these breweries and includes transportation.

Enjoying the locals ability to create tasty beer is just bonus when visiting Patagonia. After a long day of adventure, nothing hits the spot more than a cold “artesanal.”
