Time to Get Dirty

Well, it’s official. Spring has sprung.

We haven’t had a good solid freeze for multiple days in the mountains, which isn’t good for spring corn backcountry ski sessions. But it is great for our landscaping which took a major hit this winter (as did many of the trees from the Santa Rosa).

We lost the majority of the large bushes that are helping stabilize a steep portion of our yard. We pulled the chainsaw out last week. After cutting back the dead and damaged, many hours of weeding as well as playing balancing games with the steep slope and a shovel, a long-forgotten series of rock walled flower beds began to reveal themselves.

So with the nice weather and lots of open space yearning for new little plants, it was time to make a trip a few kilometers down the road to our neighborhood nursery, Vivero Lenga.

The owner, Maite, travels around the world and brings home seeds to cultivate into fun and rare species for Patagonian gardens. She is also a master at the local flora.

The other ladies that work at the nursery are passionate about flowers as well. And it is always a good Spanish lesson going there.

Not to mention the prices are fabulous. We purchased a Clematis today ( I am very excited to see how it enhances our entrance) and the five gallon plant cost 45 pesos (US$14). Or 4 pesos (US$1.30) per one gallon Vinca plants. Definitely the best prices I have found in town. Plus, I love that Maite is creating a booming garden business out of her lovely property.

I am excited to get all of the new plants in the soil. But there is still much work to be done.

Jamie’s goal is to have our landscaping equal our view.

With some time, elbow grease and love we might be able to meet the goal. Vamos a ver!
