Catedral Avalanche Video Footage

As we reported  earlier this winter, on Sunday, August 3, there was a snowboard triggered avalanche at the ski resort.

Here is the link to the footage. The avalanche starts at about 2 minutes, 30 seconds. Be warned, the music that accompanies the video is not for the softest of ears.

Special kudos to the victim and his family for releasing the video in hopes others will learn from the errors made that day.

holy crapola. crazy footage, but a good reminder of snow (in)stability. that ridge gets so hammered by wind, i’m surprised more avy’s don’t occur. thanks for the link, amigos

I am Randall’s coach and was with him throught the whole ordeal. We put the footage up with his sponsor, Rome snowboards. That’s why there is riding footage and music. We put it out for education’s sake, like you mentioned, but we hoped other sites would not swipe it. It looks like you are a legit site with good intentions. If you need more info let me know, just don’t exploit us.

wow. I’m glad there’s at least a note next to the video explaining the seriousness of what you’re seeing in the last 20 seconds of that clip. But the video itself really gives the opposite impression. if education is the point, why not show just the catedral segment without the cool background music and park stunts? I can see someone watching this video and thinking the avalanche is just another wipeout like the cartwheel the rider does right before the avy segment. anyway, that’s my 2 cents! hope you two are doing well and your puppies are feeling better. sonja

Wonderful to hear from you Sonja! Long time no talk. I completely agree with you btw. Beso, Shanie

    Sonja,

Thanks for your 6 centavos worth. You make an excellent point.

How is this educational without stating the mistakes that were made?

For example, you will notice the other set of tracks, which are presumably the guides. I was shocked to see no ski cut was put into the slope. And even if the guide would have cut the slope, assuming he didn’t, there is no place to hide, as there is a huge loading zone above the entrance point.

This incident happened on the first sunny day after a 7 day storm cycle, that finished with rising snow levels, aka upside down snowpack.

Any time Shanie or I are skiing an avalanche slope, 30 degrees or more, unless it is absolutely bomber like in the spring, we put a ski cut in the starting zone.

    Los perros estan mejor. Gracias.

    Abrazo, Jamie
