Bariloche Chocolate

It’s a little-known fact that Bariloche is a South American chocolate paradise. The passionate love affair began with the arrival of European settlers in the late 1800s and was officially commercialized in 1928 by Swiss chocolatier, Carlos Triberholn. He combined his motherland knowledge of the delectable treats with entrepreneurship by opening up a small shop on the corner of Beschtedt and Mitre in city center.

Today, there are dozens of chocolate stores around town. You can find everything from a mall-style operation like Turista to the full-scale Fenoglio chocolate museum, making it evident that there are many locals following in the steps of their European forefathers. In fact, the impressive chocolate has made somewhat of an international impact. There are those, such as Sandra Scott with Chocolate Atlas, who say that Bariloche is home to the “chocolatest” street in the world, Mitre.

In my opinion, some of the best that I have tried have actually come from the ma-and-pop couple selling their creations at craft fairs…although, I must say I do love the grandmotherly image of Abuela Goye, a little family-run business that began in Colonia Suiza and is now found throughout the country. And I guess I should put in a vote for quality product to the Russian doll look-alike, Mamushka, as well.
