Bariloche Wal-Mart Referendum Passes

For better or worse, yesterday’s vote to allow or deny Wal-Mart from opening a store in Bariloche was a landslide yes for the corporation to break ground.

According to Bariloche2000, 85% voted in favor of allowing the store. It will be called ChangoMas, since it will be smaller than a typical Wal-Mart.

In other news, Cerro Catedral, never needing an excuse to not open their lifts, delayed their opening yesterday so that their employees could vote. This created quite a quilombo at the ski resort yesterday.

The opposition had been concerned that many jobs and small businesses will be lost. The advocates believe the new superstore will create more jobs as well as keep prices down.

It will be interesting to see how the big franchise integrates with a small city in Patagonia.
