Patagonian Arvejilla
September 12th, 2009 Posted in floraWritten by Shanie
Patagonia is plentiful in wild flowers. One of the varieties that has adapted itself well is the Arvejilla, or Wild Pea (Lathyrus magellanicus).
A lover of moist, shady conditions, the Arvejilla grows well at treeline along the Patagonian Andes. It favors rain, and is in need of rainfall at least once a month. The Patagonian Wild Pea is a hearty plant and has adapted itself well to deal with thick snow.
Due to its easy germination and nonchalant response to various growing conditions, seeds are easy to grow at home. Here’s the recommendation:
1) To be kind to the forest, get your seeds at local flower shops.
2) Scratch the surface of the seed with a nail clipper or other sharp tool.
3) soak seeds in water for about a day.
4) Seeds should become swollen and ready to plant (if no swelling has occurred, scar the surface of the seed a bit more).
5) With healthy soil, good sun exposure and kind-but-not-overboard watering the enlarged seed should germinate in no time.
