Patagonia Lenga

As we have written before, one of our favorite aspects to living in Patagonia is hiking amongst the amazing old growth forests. The Patagonian forests are inhabitated by two main type of trees: Lenga and Coihue. Today we are going to talk about the Lenga.

I absolutely love the Lenga for a couple of reasons.

First, the deciduous tree is a unique and beautiful part of the Patagonian natural environment.

Second, they love to talk. You can hear them squeaking with the wind, sounding as if they are having actual conversations with each other.

This grandfather of the low elevation woodland grows to heights reaching over 100 feet and has a trunk that grows to over five feet in diameter. Their leaves are small and change color with the seasons. Especially suited for living under 3,300 feet, they are able to survive at higher altitudes, but only in bush form.
