Driving in Argentina

Not a day goes by when I don’t see something ridiculous happen on the roadways.

I remember when we first visited Buenos Aires on our honeymoon in 2002. We were leaving a club really late (ie 6 am) and the taxi driver didn’t stop once; not at any signals, stop signs, or anything else for that matter. I recall thinking I was in the middle of a video game.

Here in Bariloche, the drivers are unpredictable. In fact, the only thing predictable about them is their unpredictability. Thankfully, the roads are curvy enough that the cars generally never get going fast enough to do any serious damage.

The red city buses are the worst. I don’t think the bus drivers are familar with the function of their mirrors. They just pull out when they are ready.

On another note, in the busy city of Bariloche there is a five way intersection downtown that has no stop signs from any directions. I still am not sure if there is a method to the madness, or if the least scared to crash driver wins the right of way.

A few weeks ago we came around the corner near Colonia Suiza and there was a Gaucho (Argentine cowboy) walking his bulls on the road.

We just laughed to ourselves and were once again reminded that we aren’t in Kansas anymore Toto.

Dead of Night (1945) easily the best portmanteau film ever made, and bizarrely enough an Ealing Studios production. Four directors involved: Alberto Cavalcanti, Charles Crichton, Basil Dearden and Robert Hamer. Cavalcantis section, The Ventriloquists Dummy, is incredibly creepy and a direct influence on Richard Attenboroughs (also underrated) film Magic starring Anthony Hopkins.

It was cama but not cama suite. So it reclined quite a bit, but it did not fold down coelpmtely to 180 degrees. I had one of those a couple years ago when I went to Mendoza.I slept pretty well actually.Puerto Madryn is not so resorty but definitely a tourist town. It’s just not too built up to be obnoxious and hopefully it stays that way The Travel Chica recently posted..
