Ourisia Poeppigii
December 2nd, 2008 Posted in floraWritten by Shanie
Ourisia Poeppigii is a cute little plant that sprinkles scarlet red amongst the forests of Patagonia during spring time. It is a perennial herb and grows to around 15 to 20 centimeters in height. It enjoys growing in protected, rocky, wet areas, near streams and waterfalls. The flowers grow in terminal clusters that jump out from the smooth, wide, robustly green foliage. The blossoms grow to about 20 millimeters in length and finish off with five miniature lobes. The buds pop out in late spring and early summer.
The plant is named after a famous German botanist, Eduard Friedrich Poeppig, who traveled throughout Chile, Peru and Brazil in between the years 1826 to 1832.
